Why Your Smart Home Automations Feel Laggy (And How to Fix It)

You say “good night,” and then… nothing. One Mississippi, two Mississippi, and finally the lights fade off like your house is thinking it over. If that delay drives you a little crazy, you’re not imagining it, and you’re definitely not stuck with it forever.

Automation lag is one of the most common smart home complaints, and it’s almost never because your devices are “just slow.” It’s usually a specific bottleneck you can actually track down and fix.

It’s Rarely the Bulb’s Fault

When people notice lag, they usually blame the smart bulb or plug that’s being slow to respond. But the device on the receiving end is almost always just waiting for instructions — the delay happens before the command ever reaches it. That’s an important distinction, because it means the fix isn’t “buy a faster bulb.” It’s fixing the path the command takes to get there.

The Usual Suspects Behind the Delay

Cloud round-trips. A lot of automations don’t run locally on your hub — they run on a server somewhere else. When you say “turn off the lights,” that request often travels from your voice assistant to the cloud, gets processed, then bounces back down to your hub before anything happens. If your internet connection has any latency or hiccups, you’ll feel it as lag, even though your Wi-Fi at home is fine.

An overloaded hub. Hubs that are juggling dozens of devices, especially older or budget models, can slow to a crawl during “everyone leaves for work” or “everyone comes home” style routines that fire off a dozen commands at once. The hub is basically working through a to-do list, and you’re waiting in line.

Mixed protocols talking over each other. If you’ve got a blend of Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Wi-Fi devices, each one is communicating differently, and some hubs have to translate between them. That translation step adds a small delay every single time, and it adds up when a routine controls multiple device types at once.

Wi-Fi congestion. Wi-Fi based smart plugs and bulbs share bandwidth with your laptop, your streaming devices, and every phone in the house. If your router is overwhelmed or your smart devices are stuck on a crowded 2.4GHz band, commands can get queued behind other network traffic.

Weak mesh coverage. Zigbee and Z-Wave devices rely on nearby devices to relay signals back to the hub. If the device closest to your hub gets unplugged or moved, everything downstream of it can start taking longer to respond, or drop out entirely.

How to Actually Fix It

1. Favor local automations over cloud-based ones. Many hubs and apps let you choose whether an automation runs locally or through the cloud. If your platform supports local processing (a lot of Hubitat, Home Assistant, and even some newer Matter-based setups do), use it. It cuts out the internet round-trip entirely.

2. Stagger your routines. Instead of one “goodnight” routine that fires 15 commands simultaneously, try adding tiny delays between groups of devices. It sounds counterintuitive, but spacing things out slightly often makes the whole sequence feel faster and more reliable, since the hub isn’t choking on a pile-up of requests.

3. Give your mesh network some backbone. Zigbee and Z-Wave devices that stay plugged in (like smart plugs or in-wall switches) act as repeaters for the whole network. Spread a few of these around your home rather than clustering all your battery powered sensors and hoping for the best.

4. Separate your smart home devices onto their own Wi-Fi band or network. If your router supports it, put smart plugs and bulbs on a dedicated 2.4GHz network or a guest network just for IoT devices. This keeps them from competing with bandwidth-hungry devices like laptops and streaming boxes.

5. Don’t overload one hub. If you’re running 40+ devices off a single budget hub, consider whether it’s time to upgrade to something with more processing headroom, or split things across a couple of hubs with a unifying app like Home Assistant or SmartThings tying them together.

A Quick Sanity Check

If lag only happens with voice commands but automations trigger instantly on their own (like a motion sensor turning on a light), that’s a strong sign the delay is happening on the cloud/voice assistant side, not your local network. That alone can save you hours of troubleshooting the wrong thing.

A laggy smart home isn’t a life sentence, it’s usually a sign that a command is taking a long, unnecessary detour somewhere between your voice and your lightbulb. Track down where that detour is happening, and most of the time you can shave the delay down to something that actually feels instant.
